History of Mahakaal Temple

Ujjain residents believe Mahakaal as the king because Mahakaal also known as Mahakaleshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas’ facing south with its history going thousands of years. Thousands of devotees visit this temple and especially in the month of Savan it is countless.

Chanpradyot the king of Ujjain in the sixth century appointed his son Kumar to look after the Mahakaal temple and during that time exquisite poetic texts were written on the Mahakaal temple. It was during the 12th century when the temple was reconstructed which was during the reign of Udayatiya and Narvarma.

In the 18th century, Ujjain was dominated by Maratha rulers and the present Mahakaleshwar temple which we worship was renovated by Ranoji Shinde.

The topmost part of the temple is Nagchadreshwar while the middle level is Omkareshwar and the bottom level abodes the Mahakaal Jytorling. An astonishing fact is 118 peaks of this temple is of pure gold which added the much glory to this pious temple.

The Mahakaal has been bestowed to have the largest Ling among all the other Jyotirlingas’. The complex of Mahakaal is such that it comprises of 40 temples way back from 10th century.

A unique feature of Mahakaal temple is that the topmost portion of this temple is opened only once a year that is on the auspicious day of Nagpanchami.

Lord Shiva is worshipped with ashes at the Mahakaal temple with the Vedic mantras chanted from 4 pm to 6 pm.

At Mahakaal temple the major attraction is the Bhasm Aarti which commences at the break of the dawn and happens once a day.

The highlights of this temple practice the ancient rituals to gratify the God with ceremonial customs promising to evoke spiritual calling. The Mahakaleshwar Temple known for its beautiful and rich inscribing which reflects on the grandeur of the Rajput royalties, who once ruled the region.
